2016選戰開跑，除了藍綠兩黨女性候選人對決，親民黨主席宋楚瑜的動向也備受矚目，親民黨今（21日）下午將舉行擴大幹部會議，討論明年總統、立委選舉事宜，向來挺宋參選的親民黨副秘書長劉文雄也透露，「今天會議應該會一面倒地懇請宋主席出來參選！」
宋楚瑜先前曾表明，自己參選意願將在國民黨全代會通過提名人選後決定，時機點約於7月底、8月初宣布；而今親民黨將開會討論選戰事宜，宋楚瑜參選呼聲頗高。
劉文雄表示，宋楚瑜過去1個月經常至中南部演講，獲得非常好的回應，但最後是否參選，仍須尊重他的決定。親民黨立委陳怡潔也說，宋楚瑜30年來的施政能力超越藍綠，若宋能為人民、為國家做事，無論有什麼樣的規劃，她都會給予最深的祝福與期待。
對於宋楚瑜參選可能為大選投下變數，洪秀柱競選團隊發言人游梓翔表示，宋楚瑜不會不知道參選將讓民進黨坐收漁利；蔡英文則回應，不論是誰加入這個選戰，「我們都會謹慎以對、步步為營。」
